Job Overview
The post holder will provide the lead clinical role for the implementation of the education, training and development strategy in the Surgical Service at the City Road of Moorfields eye Hospital.
The post holder must ensure the implementation of education and training to support evidenced based care across the clinical teams. They will improve standards of care through the development of all staff groups, undertaking audit and research, teaching and supporting colleagues and the provision of skilled leadership.
The post holder will ensure that the workforce is fit for purpose in terms of their roles and that individual/role competencies are reviewed to provide a safe, high quality and efficient service. The post holder will lead for the development and provision of surgical service training programmes..
The post holder will lead for the Department the implementation of mandatory training, preceptorship and continuing professional development. The post holder will contribute to the Trust education and development strategies, leading projects as designated by the Lead Nurse.
Main duties of the job
The Post Holder Will
Ÿ Develop clinical protocols as a member of the multidisciplinary team and support clinical areas in the development of such protocols.
Ÿ Minimise clinical risk by ensuring that clinical practice and the development of clinical guidelines adhere to guidelines produced by regulatory bodies.
Ÿ Ensure interventions undertaken are in line with best practise guidelines
Ÿ Develop and deliver specific and relevant teaching programmes for all disciplines and grades of staff in order to ensure all staff are equipped to deliver service needs.
Ÿ Review and evaluate all teaching programmes, and lead on the development of new programmes when a need is identified.
- Promote and undertake nursing research updating own knowledge to promote excellence in clinical practice.
- Work with the Practice Development Team in the development and implementing of evidence-based practice.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder will:
Ÿ Develop clinical protocols as a member of the multidisciplinary team and support clinical areas in the development of such protocols.
Ÿ Minimise clinical risk by ensuring that clinical practice and the development of clinical guidelines adhere to guidelines produced by regulatory bodies.
Ÿ Ensure interventions undertaken are in line with best practise guidelines
Ÿ Ensure that child protection and vulnerable adult legislation is adhered to within own practise and service, arranging directorate training as required.
Ÿ Provide a visible clinical profile, having an advisory and clinical input into the development of staff as directed by the Lead Nurse.
Ÿ Prepare accurate and concise reports, both written and verbal
Ÿ Deploy effective communication strategies to ensure that information and knowledge is imparted sensitively according to needs of patients, staff and students in training
Ÿ Be an active member of relevant Trust committees and groups contributing to developing/implementing local/national strategy.
Ÿ Keep relevant records and submit reports in a professionally acceptable manner.
Ÿ Promote a positive relationship with all stakeholders within the service.
Ÿ Contribute to the clinical governance process, by identifying and acting appropriately regarding incidents of poor practice through clinical incident reporting, audit and research.
Ÿ Develop and facilitate nursing, clinical skills and practice in line with national and local policy.
Ÿ Facilitate a high quality, cost effective specialist service through monitoring and audit and other quality initiatives agreed by the trust.
Education and Leadership
Ÿ Develop and deliver specific and relevant teaching programmes for all disciplines and grades of staff in order to ensure all staff are equipped to deliver service needs.
Ÿ Review and evaluate all teaching programmes, and lead on the development of new programmes when a need is identified.
Ÿ Provide the lead for specific skills development and/or Practise Based Seminars for all staff as agreed with Lead Nurse.
Ÿ Develop and establish systems to capture all education and training activity within areas of responsibility and as directed by the Lead Nurse/Nurse Consultant on the production of the Service training needs analysis.
Ÿ Identify own development needs in line with service requirements within personal development plan.
Ÿ Develop and distribute educational material to support staff in practise.
Ÿ Ensure personal, peer support and clinical supervision needs are met.
Ÿ Act as a mentor/preceptor and resource person for all nursing and support staff, as appropriate to the role.
Ÿ Ensure mentorship training is updated annually and that there are enough mentors within the Service to provide a suitable learning environment for all staff.
Ÿ Ensure clinical environment is conducive to supporting the education and learning of all staff and students.
Ÿ Ensure educational opportunities provided within clinical areas for pre registration students, supports the learning outcomes identified within their learning agreement.
Ÿ Provide advice on role competencies and contribute to the development of competencies for nurses, assistant practitioners and clinical support workers
Ÿ Advise on the specific needs of the clinical service in the specialist area and contribute to workforce plans.
Ÿ Contribute to clinical governance outcomes.
Ÿ Work closely with the Lead Nurse, Nurse Consultant, Head of Nursing, directorate management team, nurses, medical colleagues and users of the service to ensure that any change in the provision of services is patient centred, clinically effective and demonstrates value for money.
Ÿ Work with the link teachers, practice educators and clinical placement development managers from Local Training establishments to ensure that standards for practice placement and opportunities for students are enhanced in the clinical field.
Ÿ Develop and use personal clinical knowledge and skills to promote excellence in nursing care and educate students.

Education/ Qualification
Essential criteria
- registered nurse level 1
- relevant clinical post-registration ophthalmic qualification
Desirable criteria
- post graduate certificate in education or equivalent
- master's degree
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in providing an independent nurse-led service in an ophthalmic setting
- experience in teaching others and responding to learning needs
Desirable criteria
- experience in writing policies, procedures, protocols
- experience with the assessment and completion of competency assessment for staff
Skills And Abilities
Essential criteria
- can independently assess, diagnose and manage common ocular conditions using relevant equipment in emergency ophthalmic care setting
- can demonstrate the ability to teach staff
