About SECEP:
SECEP serves the school systems of Chesapeake, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Southampton, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, with financial assistance from the Virginia Department of Education. The organization provides a formal structure through which the participating school systems can plan and operate programs for children with special needs. SECEP presently comprises five programs:
- The Re-ED Program: Focuses on providing educational and therapeutic services to children with emotional and behavioral disorders.
- The Autism Spectrum Program (ASP): Caters to the educational needs of students on the autism spectrum.
- Educational and Behavioral Interventions for Challenging Students (EBICS): Offers specialized support for students with challenging behaviors.
- Tidewater Regional Alternative Education Program (TRAEP): Provides alternative educational opportunities for students who require a different approach.
- Raising Expectations and Abilities for Children with Complex Health needs (REACH): Supports children with complex health needs in achieving their educational goals.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the special education teacher in the implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs).
- Provide support to students in small groups or one-on-one settings.
- Help prepare instructional materials and classroom activities.
- Monitor and document students’ progress and behavior.
- Support students with daily living skills and personal care needs as necessary.
- Assist with classroom management and maintaining a positive learning environment.
- Collaborate with the special education teacher and other staff to address the needs of students.
- Participate in professional development and training sessions.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s Degree or higher preferred.
- Experience working with children, preferably in an educational or therapeutic setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting children with special needs.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of child development and special education practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification or training in special education or related field.
- Para pro, Associates Degree or 60 hours of collge credit perferred
- Experience working with students in one of SECEP’s specific programs.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.23 – $30.51 per hour
