Role Description The Learning Mentor is a full-time, on-site role based in Salford, supporting children and adults with autism, learning disabilities, and associated complex needs in educational and community settings. The role involves working directly with individuals to enhance learning, social communication, and independence, using person-centered strategies and structured activities. The Learning Mentor will provide one-to-one and small group support, assist with planning and delivering learning sessions, and help adapt materials to meet individual needs. Responsibilities include monitoring progress, recording observations, contributing to support plans, and collaborating with teachers, therapists, families, and other colleagues to ensure consistent, high-quality support. The role also includes promoting safeguarding, encouraging positive behavior, and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment.
Qualifications
- Ability to build trusting relationships with children and adults with autism and learning disabilities, demonstrating patience, empathy, and a person-centered approach.
- Experience supporting learning in educational or care settings, including facilitating activities, adapting materials, and encouraging engagement and participation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and liaise with families and external professionals.
- Understanding of safeguarding principles, professional boundaries, and safe working practices within education and care environments.
- Skills in observing, recording, and reporting individuals’ progress to inform support plans and contribute to reviews and goal-setting.
- Resilience and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond calmly to challenging situations and support positive behavior strategies.
- Basic IT skills to use digital tools for recording information, communicating with colleagues, and accessing learning resources.
- Relevant experience in special education, social care, or support work; a qualification in education, health and social care, or a related field is beneficial.
- Willingness to undertake training in areas such as autism awareness, communication approaches, positive behavior support, and de-escalation techniques.
