Work Hours: 7:50 AM – 4:00 PM; occasional evenings and weekends

Employment Term: 10 months

Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies is a public regional STEM school. Our coaches facilitate learning through hands-on, project and problem-based instruction thoughtfully designed to challenge students. Position Purpose

Coaches in innovative schools are committed to ensuring that every student graduates from high school ready for college, careers, and life. Through rigorous teaching and learning grounded in high expectations, along with extensive on-site coaching, educators foster a culture of collaborative inquiry, providing students with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge, skills, and dispositions that enable them to participate fully in a technology-rich, contemporary society. NEAAAT educators are positive, enthusiastic, and proactive, and demonstrate a passion for working with middle and high-school-age students. The Exceptional Children’s Behavior Coach operates in a dual capacity. They provide students with exceptional needs academic and behavior support as defined in their IEPs, while supporting the needs of the Exceptional Children’s program. Crucially, this coach expands their behavioral expertise school-wide, working with any student demonstrating behavioral needs and providing extensive on-site coaching to instructional staff to foster a positive, supportive, and effectively managed school environment.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work directly with any student demonstrating behavioral needs, providing timely interventions, crisis de-escalation, and ongoing socioemotional support to ensure they can fully access their education.
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and design, implement, and monitor individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) for students requiring targeted behavioral interventions.
  • Provide extensive on-site coaching to educators and paraprofessionals in classroom management, positive behavior supports, and the implementation of behavior strategies within a collaborative STEM environment.
  • Lead students to develop soft skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Utilize technology to facilitate instruction and maximize student learning
  • Employ a variety of assessment tools and strategies to measure student progress toward learning, college, and career goals
  • Identify and select different instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs
  • Promote high expectations and the skills needed for success beyond high school
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and families regarding student progress and student needs
  • Develop and support the implementation of IEPs for students with disabilities, and use diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods to meet the students’ academic, behavioral, and/or socioemotional needs. Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials
  • Provide and submit accurate data and reports as needed to ensure program compliance and student progress
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to professional growth through participation in professional learning activities
  • Contribute as a member of a high-performing team
  • Perform other duties as assigned and as necessary to fulfill the day-to-day needs of the school

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong foundational knowledge of behavior analysis, positive behavior interventions and supports, and crisis de-escalation strategies.
  • Knowledge of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial, team-centered environment

  • Knowledge of NCSIS and ECATS; knowledge of LiFT preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies and procedures regarding exceptional children
  • Considerable knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
  • Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the field of exceptional children's education and federal programs
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics, and to develop meaningful reports from that information

Education, Training, Experience

  • Current NC Professional Educator’s License containing one or more areas of special education.
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a concentration in education or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching students with special needs.
  • Possession of a valid NC driver’s license.

  • Possess a deep commitment to serving the needs of students with disabilities and their families.

Work Conditions

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, hand, and power tools, and to handle other computer components.
  • Lifting and transporting of light to moderately heavy objects (20 to 100 pounds) occasionally.
  • Ability to be physically active, which includes, but is not limited to, standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, sitting, and walking, including repetitive motions.
  • Ability to stand in excess of 6 hours.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
