Opportunity
The Activity Worker plays a key role in the delivery of the DIVERSE city Schools Out Summer Camps, an inclusive and culturally responsive summer camp for children ages 6–12 in Delta, BC. This position involves working collaboratively with a team to support child participants through the planning, facilitation, and evaluation of engaging, child-centered activities. The camp integrates cross-cultural awareness, environmental responsibility, and personal health and well‑being, using a full-family approach.
The program prioritizes participation for Indigenous and Newcomer children, followed by other high-risk children within the school district, and those facing barriers to accessing summer camps. The Activity Worker will work under the guidance of the Camp Coordinator to ensure successful implementation of the program, helping to create a safe, welcoming, and fun environment that reflects the diverse needs of the community.
The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, creative, and passionate about child development, thrives in a multicultural team setting, and excels at building strong relationships with children, families, staff, and service delivery partners.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement comprehensive activities that align with the following 5 core outcome domains:
Social-Emotional Development, Connectedness, Interests and Competencies, Health and Well-Being, Service to Community;
Maintain related records and statistics for input on the interim and final report;
Coordinate camp activities from the direction of Coordinator and ensure the main themes of program are met;
Integrate culturally inclusive curricula that promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures, including weekly Indigenous cultural components;
Ensure a healthy and safe environment in which children can interact and play. Observe and remove potential hazards;
Promote health and wellness through daily physical activities, mindfulness practices, and nutritional education;
Support social and emotional learning to help children develop self-awareness, self-regulation, and interpersonal skills;
Attend program planning/review meetings, monthly team meetings, all staff meetings, and special meetings as required;
Adhere to the Policies and Procedures of the department and the Policies, Procedures and Practices of the Society;
Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager and/or Director or another assigned supervisor.
Qualifications
Certificate or coursework in a related field (e.g., Child and Youth Care, Education, Recreation, Social Work, or other human/social service fields);
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
Experience working with diverse and multilingual children and families, particularly Indigenous and Newcomer populations;
Strong knowledge of childhood development, group facilitation, and recreational activity planning;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural team setting;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; fluency in a second language;
Strong organizational and time management skills;
Comfortable using computers and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet);
Emergency First Aid & CPR certification;
Knowledge of etiquette, sportsmanship, and the rules of common sports;
Effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills;
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team;
Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
