About The Role
Leader Education are seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join our Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Newcastle. Our provision supports children and young people aged 5–16 who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education.
Our core mission is to restore confidence, improve behaviour, and support pupils in successfully reintegrating into mainstream education or moving on to positive next steps. This is a highly rewarding role for someone who is passionate about making a real difference to vulnerable young people.
Key Responsibilities
Support pupils on a one-to-one and small group basis, both academically and emotionally
Help pupils re-engage with learning and develop positive behaviour strategies
Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or exclusion
Support teachers in delivering tailored learning programmes
Promote a calm, consistent, and safe learning environment
Assist with behaviour management using restorative and trauma-informed approaches
Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external agencies
We Are Looking For Someone Who
Has experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour, SEMH needs, or additional needs (desirable but not essential)
Is patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient
Can remain calm under pressure and respond positively to challenging situations
Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
Has a genuine desire to help pupils rebuild confidence and succeed
Holds GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths (essential)
