Young Audiences New York (YANY) is actively seeking practicing artists with experience working with
young people (3K–12th grade) for in-person, part-time contractual teaching positions in partnership with public schools and community-based organizations throughout New York City. Many of our programs take place in communities representing the full diversity of NYC, specifically in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, and we value educators who are committed to creating inclusive, engaging, and affirming learning environments for all youth. YANY works with artists across a wide range of artistic disciplines and is currently prioritizing applicants with experience in the bolded areas below:
- Dance: African, Contemporary, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, K-Pop, Latin, Step
- Digital Media: Animation, Content Creation, Filmmaking, Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Photography, Podcasting
- Music: Audio Storytelling, Brass, Digital DJing, Drums/Percussion, Keyboard/Piano, Music Production, Rap/Hip-Hop, Sound Engineering, Vocal Performance
- Theater: Acting, Improv, Musical Theater, Puppetry, Slam Performance, Spoken Word, Storytelling
- Visual/Fine Arts: Architecture, Design, Drawing, Fashion Design, Illustration, Painting, Printmaking, Public/Street Art, Sculpture, Textiles
YANY Teaching Artists (TAs) design and facilitate multi-session arts residencies that foster creativity,
artistic skill-building, collaboration, self-expression, social-emotional growth, and future-ready learning skills. Working closely with classroom teachers and school administrators, TAs create culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate curricula that center student voice and encourage young people to take creative risks, build confidence, and make meaningful connections to their communities and the world around them. We seek artists who demonstrate both strong artistic practice and a commitment to positive youth development through collaborative, engaging, and reflective teachingpractices. Teaching Artists report to YANY’s program staff.
Role and Responsibilities
- Design and facilitate engaging, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive arts residencies for young people
- Attend planning meetings with partners and draft customized curriculum for each residency
- Work in partnership with teachers, administrators, and youth to plan culminating events
- Incorporate creative, inquiry-based, youth-centered, and future-ready teaching practices and tools that engage contemporary learners
- Foster learning environments that support collaboration, self-expression, social-emotional learning, and positive relationship-building
- Sustain regular, thorough, timely, and professional communications with YANY staff
- Submit curriculum, photos, reflections, and any other required documents in a timely fashion
- Generate and submit supply orders for residencies within program budgets
- Enter biweekly timesheets
- Attend meetings, trainings, professional development workshops, and other program events as requested by program staff
Competencies & Skills
- Mastery in traditional or digital/technological artistic mediums
- Passionate about working with school-aged youth and supporting their artistic and developmental growth
- Brings creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm to collaboration with youth, partners, and YANY staff
- Centers youth voice, creativity, and identity within the learning process
- Strong interpersonal skills and authentic engagement with diverse communities
- Experienced in designing innovative multi-session lesson plans aligned with educational standards (including NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts)
- Committed to having a reflective practice and seeking continuous improvement
- Skilled in staging performances or mounting exhibitions within a 6-12-session residency
- Meets programming and administrative deadlines consistently
- Excellent time management and organizational abilities
- Uses positive youth development, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices to cultivate safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environments
- Experience with arts therapy practices or techniques a plus
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or proven experience working in 3K-12 settings
- Demonstrated expertise in an arts discipline through educational and/or professional experience, with an active ongoing artistic practice
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching arts-based programming to young people ages 3-17
- Open to travel to sites throughout the Bronx and Queens (a significant portion of our partners are in these two boroughs)
- In-school and after-school availability, with a minimum availability of 2 full days per week
- DOE fingerprinting and background clearance (pre-employment)
- Ability to instruct in languages other than English a plus (specifically Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin)
Teaching Artist Pay: Starting instructional rate of $75/hour.
