Location: Shawnessy YMCA
Start Date: Immediately
Salary: Strength and Conditioning Instructor: $18.00–$20.00/hr (commensurate with education and experience). Personal Trainer: $25.49–$39.90/hr (commensurate with education and experience).
Availability:
Friday mornings 5:15 am–10:00 am and Saturday mornings 10:30 am–1:30 pm.

Responsibilities
- Create a welcoming, professional, and engaging presence on the weight floor by greeting members, building relationships, and maintaining an approachable demeanor.
- Perform regular walk‑throughs and equipment inspections to ensure a safe, clean, and hazard‑free environment; provide light cleaning and proactive maintenance as needed.
- Orient members to weight floor etiquette, equipment use, and training best practices through preventative education and support.
- Conduct YFit appointments, intake interviews, and functional movement assessments to understand member goals, exercise history, and movement capacity.
- Design and deliver safe, effective, evidence‑based individual, semi‑private, and group fitness programs tailored to members’ abilities and goals.
- Educate clients on training principles, helping them set realistic, health‑conscious goals and expectations.
- Work strictly within personal training and group fitness scope of practice, maintaining professional and ethical conduct, client confidentiality, and YMCA values at all times.
- Refer members to external health professionals when needs fall outside scope of practice.
- Support group fitness classes with set‑up, delivery, and attendance as required.
- Recommend programs, services, and initiatives that support member engagement and fitness success.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established code procedures.
- Participate in department, branch initiatives, special events, and ongoing professional development to stay current and maintain best practices.
Requirements and qualifications
- Must hold a current Personal Training certification from Fitness Alberta.
- Bachelor of Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related degree preferred.
- Group Fitness certification and experience in Group Strength, Older Adult, Cycle, Yoga, or Cardio considered an asset.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR‑C certificated within the last 12 months from an approved AB OHS provider. Asset if certification is issued by one of the following five Canadian organizations:
Canadian Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lifesaving Society, St John’s Ambulance, and/or Canadian Ski Patrol. - Evidence of a clear Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search.
