Title: Special Education Teacher

Qualifications:New York State Certification in Special Education and related subjects. Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field. Proven experience as a Special Education teacher or relevant role.

Supervisor: Building Principal and/or Director of Instructional Services/Special Education

Salary:Based upon BTU Agreement

Overview: Responsible for teaching Special Education with proven results in student learning. The teacher will be responsible for providing high-quality instruction in a special education classroom serving students with a wide range of academic strengths, learning profiles, and individualized needs, and will plan, prepare, and teach well developed culturally responsive lessons which enthuse and inspire students, and promote an exciting rigorous learning environment. The Teacher will provide student services to those students enrolled, ensuring the effective completion of the curriculum that they are responsible for. This person will develop creative forms of instruction to meet the needs of a diverse rural student population, while establishing and enforcing non-instructional duties throughout the educational process. The Teacher will work within a diverse environment of dynamic learners. The position will require a high degree of creativity, cultural awareness and problem-solving capabilities, potentially across multiple grade levels. The Teacher must have knowledge of current evidence-based special education topics and methodologies.

Teaching Assignment:The successful candidate may serve multi-grade or multi-age groupings, including but not limited to an elementary 15:1 classroom. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to differentiate instruction, collaborate effectively with colleagues and related service providers, and create a supportive, inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students.

Goal: To be committed to helping students achieve commencement level education with a primary emphasis on learning experiences which address the NYS Common Core and applicable curriculum.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Assess student's skills, present levels of performance, learning needs, and individual strengths to develop tailored, effective instructional plans and measurable annual IEP goals that support educational progress.
  • Modifies curriculum and instruction across core content areas using evidence-based practices, such as multisensory learning, explicit teaching, repetition, and phonics-based strategies, to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students in inclusive educational settings. Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instruction and goals as needed to promote meaningful growth and access to the general education curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver differentiated lesson plans and meaningful learning opportunities for students with a wide range of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and learning needs. Instruction is designed to support students with disabilities, including autism, emotional and behavioral disabilities, visual impairments, and other learning differences, while recognizing and building upon each student's individual strengths, abilities, and potential.
  • Ability to utilize positive reinforcement and behavior modification and instruction techniques to develop positive changes in our students' academic and social development.
  • Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, families, and school staff to develop, implement, and adjust individualized supports and instructional strategies that promote student growth and access to the curriculum.
  • Monitor children's behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed, ability to maintain classroom order, reducing crises.
  • Ability to communicate and discuss important matters that might impede students' progress with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Support students in developing the skills needed for a successful transition to their next educational setting.
  • Keep detailed records of all special needs students that adhere to local, state and federal guidelines to remain compliant.
  • Administer tests and/or evaluations to assist in diagnosing certain learning disabilities and to monitor the progress of each student, develops referrals to outside agencies as needed.
  • Special Education resource for other professionals.
  • Ability to engage students and teach in an online environment
  • Participates in counselor/support and staff meetings.
  • Participates as a member of school-based committees as requested.
  • Consults with parents/guardians:
    • Acts as a resource for information with regard to student's progress, potential problems, and/or transition to the next grade;
    • Regarding referrals to outside agencies; and/or
    • Communicating student academic progress, progress toward annual IEP goals, and overall development;
    • Sharing information regarding student strengths, areas of need, potential concerns, and transition planning; and
    • Maintaining ongoing communication and being available to respond to parent/guardian questions and concerns.
    • Works with administration to report child abuse and follows up as needed.
    • Continuous professional development.
    • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent or designee.
