Key Responsibilities and Tasks
- Academic:
- Collaborate with the Learning Leader of Language and Literature/Individuals and Society and our IB Coordinators to develop units of work
- Contribute to the Language and Literature and Individual and Societies Departments in an effort to build a high‑functioning collaborative team
- Work with our MYP Instructional Coach on pedagogy, assessments, and providing timely feedback
- Deliver the program with a student‑centred, age‑appropriate and inquiry‑based approach
- Assess student progress, provide meaningful feedback, record results, and produce reports on progress
- Establish clear student expectations for a supportive, caring and effective teaching and learning environment
- Communicate regularly with students and parents on progress
- Use technology in the classroom to enhance learning and work with community members within and beyond the gates of the College
- Keep up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources and related strategies, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities
- Engage meaningfully in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and various professional development opportunities
- Collaborate with colleagues within the department and beyond, with humility and openness to feedback on all aspects of the role
- Establish effective, supportive and caring relationships with students
- Provide direction and support for all students, and employ strategies to seek out students who are not forthcoming
- Assist current students in integrating into the life of the school
- Respond promptly to parent inquiries and concerns, developing collaborative and informed relationships, paying particular attention to families who are new to the College
- Ensure that school policies, practices and standards are maintained
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail, organization and planning
- Collaborate with all colleagues to ensure that students are being served well, and supported appropriately across all subject areas
- Participate fully and collaboratively in a shared approach to the Middle Years form advising programs, weekly routines and processes
- Co‑curricular, Coaching and Supervisory:
- Lead with skill, passion and enthusiasm within our co‑curricular program, including the arts, coaching, clubs and/or intramurals
- Supervision duty as assigned
- UCC students benefit from a robust co‑curricular programme including athletics, with opportunities to participate in weekend and CAIS tournaments, some of which are out of province
Job Requirements
- Both a Bachelor’s of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education are required
- An undergraduate degree with a major in History is desirable
- Ontario Teachers’ Qualifications in the Junior‑Intermediate or Intermediate‑Senior Grades is an asset
- Be a member in good standing of the Ontario College of Teachers
- 3 years of relevant teaching experience is an asset
- Experience with grade 6 and 7 students is desirable
- International Baccalaureate PYP/MYP experience is an asset
- Demonstrated passion for subjects taught and the ability to instill passion in students
- Demonstrated ability to recognize individual learning styles and the characteristics of learners, and the willingness to differentiate accordingly
- Demonstrated ability to employ a wide variety of teaching techniques, including utilisation of technology
- Celebrates differences, cherishes similarities and gives voice to multiple perspectives, fostering an inclusive community
- Ability to possess special in‑depth knowledge that enhances the performance of students and peers
- Robust understanding of subject matter and ability to share knowledge with students in an age‑appropriate manner
- Commitment to staying up to date on the latest research in the field
- Consistent expectations of students and self, driven by passion for subjects
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with fellow classroom teachers and students
