Summary

Under the direction of the Math Department Chair at Geffen Academy and the respective Division Director, Geffen Academy Math Educators are responsible for the delivery of an innovative program of secondary school instruction. The Geffen Academy Math Educator will be responsible for an array of duties, including participating in the creation of a course of study, offering exciting and engaging instruction to students in as many as five (5) courses each term, and participating in the life of the school in a robust and fully engaged manner. This is a bargaining unit covered position.

Geffen Academy at UCLA is seeking an Educator with the familiarity and ability to teach a variety of math courses for students in grades 6-12. The curriculum is based on the traditional textbooks as well as on the AoPS (Art of Problem Solving) textbooks, such as Introduction to Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Intermediate Counting and Probability. Calculus and some other advanced courses at Geffen Academy will closely resemble the corresponding courses given at the UCLA Department of Mathematics.

Geffen Academy is seeking an Educator with a background in classroom instruction. We are looking for someone who can apply math to other areas of human knowledge, from physics to computer science to economics and finance to history and literature, in close cooperation with students and educators. Someone who believes that solid mathematics education is beneficial for every student and who is able and willing to work with students of varying math backgrounds.

Job Duties

Collaborate with other Educators in the creation of a Geffen Academy program that meets the needs and interests of Geffen Academy's students.

Communicate information about student progress to relevant student services colleagues, including to the Department Chair, Dean of Students, Academic Advising and College Guidance staff, Registrar, Counselor, Faculty Service Coordinator, and athletic team coaches.

Participate in department representation at parent meetings, recruitment events and math placement process that includes creating the exams, and supervising and grading them.

Evaluate and choose books, digital materials, and other academic resources.

Assess the continued relevance and success of course offerings within the department.

Participate in committee work, whether the committee's focus is solely within the department, or reaches to other parts of Geffen Academy enterprise.

Participate in interdisciplinary instructional programs.

Serve as instructor/mentor/advisor of students' independent projects.

Engage in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

Be available to provide coverage of instructional work for both scheduled and unscheduled absences of colleagues.

Participate in continuing professional development and training activities.

Follow and adhere to UCLA and Geffen Academy policies, procedures, norms, and handbooks as directed.

Adhere to Geffen Academy and the University of California applicable policies, procedures, and established protocols. Read and adhere to the school norms, protocols and requirements as outlined in the school Handbooks.
