Reporting To: Accountable to Professor Albert Leung, Head of the School of Dentistry
Location: RCSI, Sandyford Dental Education Centre (DEC), other DECs as they are developed, RCSI St Stephen’s Green Campus and all other RCSI owned or commissioned teaching, research and clinical facilities.

Contract type/duration: Permanent, full time (1FTE): preferable.
RCSI may consider part time options of no less than 0.8 FTE, subject to the successful candidate and RCSI needs.

Specific Duties of the Roles:
Programme Delivery and Development:
RCSI School of Dentistry operates a community-based BDS curriculum, which aligns with the relevant dentistry regulatory requirements for undergraduate teaching in Ireland. The School of Dentistry also currently offers Level 10 Programmes (PhD and Professional Doctorates), and more academic programmes will continue to be developed in due course.
• You will be responsible for procuring and implementing all aspects of Dental Education and Primary Care Dentistry, and also within your area(s) of specialist/special interests in clinical dentistry and dental education.
• You will be a Leader in delivering all aspects (Clinical, Service, Teaching and Research) Dental Education and Primary Care Dentistry.
• You will be working collaboratively with the team to contribute to and participate in the continuous development and delivery of the School’s level 8 (and where appropriate level 9 and level 10 as well, including academic supervision) educational programme.
• You will contribute to the development and enhancement of the School of Dentistry Curricula, ensuring that the applications to clinical practice contents are current, relevant, and aligned with advancements in the practice of dentistry.
Programme Organisation:
You will be one of the leaders and be working with your peers to advance the programme of work to enable implementation of this ambitious project, including supporting;
• The development of teaching and assessment schedules based on the proposed programme whilst utilizing available resources as efficiently as possible.
• The continuous implementation and set up of Dental Education Centres (DECs) – a key facility for the delivery of community-based dentistry model, and positive learning experiences for students.
• The technology platform development to support the delivery of the dentistry programme in close collaboration with IT colleagues.
• The development of the Marks and Standards documentation.
• The development of and coordination of in-module and end of module assessments as required.
• The quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules. Where applicable support External Examiner / Accreditation audits or activities.
• To act as module lead, or year lead, as requested
• To act as module co-ordinator or year co-ordinator, as requested
• To act as an Academic Personal Tutor as part of Professionalism module.
• To be involved in Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL) or similar activities, including review of the cases & development of educational & assessment materials, and the delivery of appropriate EBL activities.
• To be involved in Simulation Dental Learning Environment (SDLE) activities, and lead sessions and assessments as necessary.
• Develop relevant Policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the School of Dentistry in accordance with Irish regulations.
Teaching
• Teaching in all aspects of dental education, with an emphasis on primary care dentistry, academic and curriculum development and support, mentoring students, conducting research as appropriate, and collaborating with industry and the academic community.
• Prepare and lead the delivery of teaching to students across the dentistry programmes. Ensure that modules being taught are delivered and examined appropriately and effectively and in adherence to the relevant Curriculum Course Book and Marks & Standards regulations.
• Integrate innovative teaching methods, technology, and research findings into the curriculum of the dentistry programmes to enhance students’ learning experience, in accordance with the School of Dentistry teaching and assessment strategies.
• Act as liaison between students and staff managing Student communications (Academic Performance; Approach to learning journey; Content sign posting etc.).
• In time, the School of Dentistry shall be developing NFQ levels 9 and 10 programmes. As a Lecturer, you will be actively contributing to this drive in dental education and primary care dentistry, from curriculum design, assessment planning, facilities procurements, organisation of clinical and other pedagogic materials and capacity building in teaching, service provision and the relevant research.
Clinical Teaching and Service Provision
• To be actively involved in Clinical Activity, and to lead and co-ordinate where appropriate, including all aspects of primary care dentistry in any of the Dental Education Centres (including clinics) or other relevant facilities where RCSI operates or uses, including student supervision, assessments and service provision as necessary.
• To conduct clinical research where appropriate as part of the research output for this post.
• Where appropriate, to co-ordinate and lead the procurement, integration, and the delivery of dental education particularly in relation to clinical and service provision
Research
• To pursue sustained high quality research activities through original research and scholarship, including other research related contributions such as publications in high impact journals, conference presentations, consultancy projects/advice in dentistry, particularly in the field of dental education and primary care dentistry.
• To conduct original research in basic and dental sciences related to the practice of dentistry and in dental education.
• To sustain an independent research profile aligned with established priority areas of research within the School and across RCSI.
• Where applicable, to collaborate with other researchers, clinicians, and dental healthcare professionals in related fields to advance the understanding of oral health and dental education.
• Mentor and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students where appropriate
• Leading sustained impact activities including public engagements, and therein making a significant contribution to the development of appropriate dental education and primary care dentistry policy at a national and international level.
The Ideal Candidate:
Will have demonstrable evidence of the below:
• A PhD in an area relevant to dentistry or dental education or equivalent (for example, Level 10 Professional Doctorate)
• Completion of appropriate postgraduate training in the relevant discipline in clinical/general dentistry
• Possession of an MFDRCSI, and/or an MGDSRCSI, or an FFDRCSI, or an FGDSRCSI, or a Fellowship from a Royal College of Surgeons in the UK in the same discipline as above (Desirable)
• Full registration as a dentist with the Dental Council in Ireland or holds a qualification recognised by the Dental Council in Ireland for registration as a dentist in Ireland
AND
• Experience of university teaching, particularly in clinical dentistry
• Strong educational interest, acumen and skill set, as evidenced by experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching and assessment in dentistry or relevant health science domains.
• An ability to engage undergraduate students through a range of teaching modes.
• An ability to continuously adapt and innovate teaching methods and in dental education
• Demonstrate an interest in seeking opportunities to support students’ whole development
• Strong commitment to own personal and professional development.
• Effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation.
• Able to build and maintain strong working relationships.
• Requires minimum direction to effectively deliver on assigned functions, and demonstrates a positive, student –centred and solution focused approach to addressing challenges and ambiguity.
• Has flexibility to work irregular hours on occasion, and for international travel on occasion if required.
• Deadline-oriented while delivering high quality teaching.
• An active researcher with research track records particularly in the areas of digital dentistry, prosthodontics and/or periodontics.
• A sustained track record of multiple senior authorship of papers in high impact peer-reviewed journals and of securing competitive grant funding as PI, industrial sponsorships and other external funding and/or patents in the areas of digital dentistry, diagnostics, prosthodontics.
• Qualification in teaching and learning in higher education.
