Learning and Engagement Coordinator

Rate of Pay: $26.00 per hour

Reports to:

Curator of Programs and Outreach

Type of Employment:
Part‑time, 21 hours per week (bargaining unit position, member of OPSEU)

Summary of Function

The Learning and Engagement Coordinator develops and implements all aspects of The Power Plant’s Power Kids programs and learning materials. The role works with the Curatorial and Communications & Marketing departments to devise strategies to increase public engagement and group visits of K‑12 students, post‑secondary students and community groups of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, with the added goal of generating revenue.

Kids at The Power Plant

Power Kids is a series of free creative workshops for children aged 7–12, led by skilled and energetic artist‑educators and inspired by current exhibitions. The workshops take place on select Sundays throughout exhibition seasons and include a guided tour in or outside the gallery followed by a short creative activity.

Duties

  • Develop plans and timelines for each exhibition season (Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter) totaling approximately 18 on‑site Power Kids programs per year, plus additional on‑and‑off‑site programs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from the Curatorial team to develop activities for participants to experiment with media, techniques, and ideas evident in works of art exhibited at The Power Plant.
  • Acquire and maintain art materials/supplies inventory.
  • Set‑up and deliver programs to children and families onsite, off‑site at partner locations, and online through Zoom.
  • Track all program expenses to maintain the budget for each program, program season, and year.
  • Maintain communication between the gallery and other community partners.
  • Work with colleagues, primarily from the Curatorial and Communications & Marketing teams, to devise strategies to increase public engagement and group visits for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Conduct outreach to staff at K‑12 schools, post‑secondary educational institutions, and community groups/organizations to build and maintain relationships.
  • Coordinate with in‑house and external editors, graphic designers, and printers.
  • Collaborate with the Curator of Programs and Outreach in supporting the Development team for grant reporting and grant writing to secure additional/future funding.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, art education, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of administrative experience in an arts organization, preferably a non‑profit.
  • Experience in gallery or museum educational programming and understanding of contemporary visual arts.
  • Ability to organize and plan multiple and simultaneous activities and perform under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal relations, including effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Creative experience in developing and delivering original, thought‑provoking hands‑on activities for children and adults alike.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Technical aptitude for computers and other office equipment/systems.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR training (renew as needed).
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening from local law enforcement (renew as needed).
  • Knowledge of languages other than English is considered an asset.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada (international applicants must possess a valid employment visa authorizing full‑time work).
