Description
The Grade 3 Teacher is responsible for delivering a rigorous, standards-based curriculum that prepares students for the transition into upper elementary. This role focuses heavily on literacy proficiency, mathematical fluency, and the first year of state-mandated standardized testing. The successful candidate will foster a growth-oriented classroom environment that emphasizes critical thinking, self-regulation, and academic stamina. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Leadership & Standards Core Curriculum Implementation: Execute high-quality lessons in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies aligned with the Hawaii Common Core State Standards. Literacy Shift: Lead students through the transition from foundational decoding to deep reading comprehension, utilizing tools such as Wonders and 95% Group intervention strategies. Mathematical Proficiency: Develop students' fluency in multiplication, division, and fractions, utilizing enVision, i-Ready, and supplemental inquiry-based strategies. SBA Readiness: Prepare students for their first experience with the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) by embedding test-taking strategies, stamina-building, and digital literacy into daily instruction. Data-Driven Instruction (HiMTSS) Diagnostic Analysis: Utilize i-Ready diagnostic and 95% data to create flexible small groups and provide Tier 2 interventions within the classroom. Progress Monitoring: Consistently track student growth and adjust instructional delivery based on formative and summative assessment data. PLC Collaboration: Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to analyze grade-level data, share "Best First Instruction" strategies, and ensure school-wide equity. Classroom Environment & Management Social-Emotional Learning: Implement a Tier 1 SEL curriculum to support students as they navigate increased academic pressure and social complexity. PBIS Integration: Maintain school-wide behavioral expectations with a focus on restorative consequences and positive reinforcement. Digital Citizenship: Guide students in the responsible use of 1:1 devices for research, creative projects, and personalized learning pathways. Communication & Professionalism Parent Partnership: Maintain proactive, transparent communication with families regarding academic progress and SBA expectations. Professional Ethics: Adhere to timely reporting, participation in Waiver Day PD, and meeting all HIDOE contractual obligations. Preferred Skills Experience with the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy instruction. Ability to differentiate instruction for a diverse population, including English Language Learners (ELs) and students with IEPs or 504 plans. Minimum Qualifications
The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.
If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Payday
New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.

- Compensation: 10-month teachers shall be compensated for the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10-month salary schedule for working a 10-month work year.
- 18 Days of Paid Sick Leave and State/Federal Holidays: 10-month teachers receive 18 days of paid sick leave (of which 6 can be utilized for personal and/or professional development purposes) during the school year provided that all conditions under the respective collective bargaining agreement are met.

- Retirement Plan: The State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least 10 years of credited service and who have reached 62 years of age or have 30 years of credited service and are 55 years old may retire and receive benefits. - Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA): If eligible, Department employees are able to participate in a tax shelter annuity program. The TSA plan allows eligible employees to contribute pre-tax dollars to an employee-selected investment service provider authorized to provide TSA products.
