The Faculty of Health & Environmental Sciences (FHES) delivers programmes that prepare future health professionals, scientists and practitioners to make a real difference in Aotearoa and beyond. The FHES Core Courses Team leads the shared first-year curriculum, supporting thousands of students as they transition into university study and progress into specialised programmes across the faculty.

We have a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) opportunity for a Lecturer to make significant impact and develop their career in teaching and service.

We Are Open To Expertise Across Areas Relevant To Our Department, And Are Particularly Interested In Applicants Who Can Contribute To Our Teaching And Research In

  • Te Tiriti, equity, and health practice
  • Challenges faced by first-year health students (academic, emotional, social)
  • Transition from school to university in health disciplines
  • Development of academic literacy and study skill
  • Innovative assessment
  • Experiences of Māori, Pasifika, or other underrepresented students (relevant to NZ context)
  • Culturally responsive teaching in health education
  • Supporting students from diverse educational backgrounds

We embrace practice-led, research-informed approaches to teaching. Your contributions to programme and course development will support our continuous-improvement focus. You will teach across programmes as assigned by the Head of Core Courses and be comfortable using digital resources to enhance learning. You will publish actively in your specialised field/s. We offer an excellent research environment with contestable research funds, and with guidance available from senior scholars. It is also expected that over time the successful candidate will seek and attract external research funding, engage with government, business, professional bodies and the community, and contribute to School/Faculty activities.

Experience supporting indigenous, equity, or inclusion focused initiatives is highly desirable.

The selection criteria sought are: 

  • Qualification:
  • A Postgraduate qualification in a field relevant to their area of work.
  • Teaching:
  • An early career academic will ideally have at least some previous teaching assistant experience.
  • More experienced candidates will have previous lecturing experience, evidence of curriculum development and preferably experience supervising Masters and/or PhD students.
  • Research:
  • An early career academic will have a solid basis for research
  • More experienced candidates will already have a more established research programme and a proven research track record with quality publications and ideally also success in external funding bids).
