Nakoda Elementary School is seeking a caring, energetic, and student-centred Grade 1 Teacher who is passionate about early learning, literacy development, and creating engaging classroom experiences through play-based learning and learning centres.

The successful candidate will foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom where students develop strong foundational skills through hands-on exploration, inquiry, collaboration, and meaningful relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming and engaging Grade 1 classroom environment grounded in play-based and experiential learning
  • Plan and implement literacy and numeracy instruction using centres, small-group learning, and hands-on activities
  • Support early literacy development through Science of Reading-aligned practices, phonics instruction, oral language development, and rich literacy experiences
  • Use purposeful learning centres to promote independence, creativity, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth
  • Integrate Stoney language, culture, and land-based learning opportunities into classroom programming
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, Elders, and community members
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and support student success
  • Collaborate with school staff, Student Success and support teams, and support personnel to provide inclusive programming
  • Use assessment data to inform instruction and monitor student growth
  • Maintain a positive classroom environment focused on belonging, engagement, and student well-being

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education degree
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate or eligibility for certification
  • Strong understanding of early childhood development and foundational literacy instruction
  • Experience with play-based learning, learning centres, and inquiry-based teaching practices preferred
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction and inclusive education practices
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
  • Understanding of Indigenous education and culturally responsive teaching practices is an asset

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience teaching in primary grades
  • Familiarity with guided reading, phonics instruction, and early numeracy strategies
  • Ability to create interactive and engaging classroom environments
  • Commitment to collaboration, flexibility, and continuous professional growth
