Overview

On-Call Education Assistant (School & Student Support A, SSA, EA) – Vancouver Board of Education

Hours:

6.5 hours per day

Compensation: $32.62 per hour + 20% in lieu of benefits if not contributing to MPP; $32.62 per hour + 14% in lieu of benefits if contributing to MPP

From September to June each year with some positions available during Summer School.

Note:

On-Call SSAs must be available to work 50% of the instructional days in any month. Applicants must be available to work throughout the district and may be required to travel to two locations on the same day (e.g., one school in the morning and another in the afternoon).

Responsibilities

  • Provides school & student support to assist school as assigned
  • Under the direction of a senior member of the team, implements individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting
  • Jointly evaluates and maintains records of student progress through communication log; discusses with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student’s program
  • Communicates and engages with community agencies as required
  • Participates in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities
  • Supports students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
  • Provides support to students with respect to their social and emotional needs
  • Supervises students, as required, and redirects and provides guidance as they occur
  • Assists in preparing instructional aid materials (e.g., visual aides); sets up and operates instructional aid equipment
  • Performs other work within the job band as assigned

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to run after a student to avert them from danger
  • Provide personal care (including diaper changes, feeding etc.)
  • Where applicable, must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Certificate and will be required to perform Occupational First Aid duties if assigned by the Principal. OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT)
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English

Assets

  • Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team
  • A clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis
  • Completion of POPARD coursework
  • Ability to speak a second language

Itinerant Assignment

A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
