Job Overview
Position:
Day Camp Counsellor – Recreation.
Purpose:
Support the Day Camp Coordinator in operating the day camp program for children aged 6‑11. The counsellor encourages, supports and demonstrates a positive, caring, energetic attitude, builds relationships with children, volunteers and staff, and upholds the Salvation Army’s mission of hope, service, dignity and stewardship.
Responsibilities
- Create and implement a 5‑week day camp program with an administrative team.
- Plan and execute camp activities, including music, sports, recreational games, crafts, and scheduled events.
- Supervise and train camp volunteers; oversee volunteer engagement.
- Provide clear directions for program activities and maintain documentation, reports, and recommendations.
- Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to foster happy and well‑developed youth.
- Chaperone children on field trips and remain with assigned groups.
- Attend all staff training, orientation and meetings.
- Model appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
- Maintain a neat, safe, and hygienic Day Camp area in accordance with Public Health and other regulations.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned (e.g., set‑up, camp cleanup).
- Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers and staff.
- Support the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act, regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
- Support campers to develop socially, mentally and spiritually.
- Act in accordance with policies to protect safety and confidentiality.
- Respond to emergencies in alignment with camp policies and procedures.
Written and Verbal Communication
- Document processes, report as needed and recommend solutions to problems.
- Create and maintain health and safety compliance reports.
- Support external reporting requests as required.
Working Conditions
- Temporary full‑time position (35 hours per week).
- Day camp setting, indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to high noise and tantrums.
- Ability to lift up to 29 lbs; requires reaching, bending, stooping, standing for long periods.
- Flexibility required for scheduling.
Conditions of Employment
- Submit a Police Record Check acceptable to The Salvation Army.
- Eligible candidates:
Canadian citizens, permanent residents or refugee status holders, aged 15‑30 years at employment start. - Valid Social Insurance Number and legal work status in Canada.
- International students, pending refugee status holders, visitors, work visa and youth visa holders not eligible.
- Maintain immigration status and valid immigration documents throughout employment.
Education, Qualifications & Certifications
- Minimum grade nine completed.
- Completion of secondary school preferred.
- Valid Standard First Aid or CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
Experience & Skilled Knowledge
- Up to 1 year of experience working with children in a day camp setting.
- Excellent written, verbal and computer skills, including video editing.

Compensation and Benefits
Target hiring range $17.60 to $21.03 per hour, maximum $25.23. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, experience and qualifications.
