About Kildalton College
Kildalton College is one of four Teagasc colleges and a leading centre for education and training in Agriculture, Horticulture and Equine Studies. We welcome over 1,200 students annually and deliver QQI-accredited Level 5 and 6 programmes, plus Level 7/8 provision in partnership with South East Technological University. Our equine facilities include an indoor arena, two outdoor arenas, an all‑weather cross‑country track, stables, tack rooms, a horse walker and a breeding enterprise. Approximately 50 horses are available for practical training.
The opportunity
Kildalton College is recruiting an Equine Teacher to join our team of equine professionals with a primary focus on delivering and coordinating the new Stud Farm Manager Apprenticeship. This role combines hands‑on equine work (schooling, young horse handling and breeding enterprise duties) with teaching, assessment and employer liaison for on‑the‑job apprenticeship learning.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver classroom and practical sessions, schemes of work, lesson plans, course notes and presentation materials tailored to apprentices’ needs.
- Set, conduct and record assessments (on‑site and on‑the‑job) in line with QQI/HEA and apprenticeship requirements, including job logbook assessments and mandatory off‑the‑job elements.
- Correct and provide constructive feedback on coursework and practical assessments; maintain accurate assessment records in the education management system.
- School and train horses, including young horses used for practical teaching.
- Support the Stud Farm Manager Apprenticeship roll‑out: liaise with the Apprenticeship Co‑ordinator, employers and mentors; carry out inspection and monitoring visits to workplaces.
- Assist with briefing/training employers and mentors participating in the apprenticeship.
- Support management of the college’s equine enterprise and contribute practical materials for practicals, open days, in‑service training and educational exhibits.
- Promote courses and the apprenticeship at schools, open days and careers events; advise prospective students on career pathways.
- Implement and maintain quality assurance processes including internal verification.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Level 8 Degree, as recognised on the NFQ, in Equine Studies
- A BHS Stage III Coach qualification or HSI Level 1 Coaching qualification would be an advantage
- Strong practical experience in stud management
- Experience in handling mares, foals and young stock
- Competent in delivering training to students
- Microsoft Office proficiency
- Stable management skills
- Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills
