Purpose Statement

The job of Associate Principal for Teaching and Learning was established for the purpose of cultivating a vibrant, personalized student-centered learning environment that optimizes college, career, and life readiness. In addition, this role is chartered to develop a highly effective teacher in every classroom through the creation of talent development systems (teacher evaluation, developmental coaching, professional development, recognition and continual growth) that drives instructional excellence.

Essential Functions

Teaching and Learning

  • Supports the philosophy and vision of Y115 Learning Model
  • Provides PreK-12 leadership and expertise at the building level in planning, implementing and monitoring progress in programming and multiple subject areas
  • Plans, facilitates, updates and monitors the 9-12 curriculum and annual publication of the 9-12 curriculum guide
  • Facilitates alignment of instruction, professional learning, technology, and assessment practices with established local, state, and national standards.
  • Supports a comprehensive, sustained, and intensive approach to improving teacher effectiveness in raising student achievement
  • Supports the utilization and implementation of formative and summative assessments
  • Provides support and direction for School Improvement Planning and collaborates with Department Chairs to develop annual Subject Area Committee objectives
  • Provides assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues; assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments; and assist teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with curriculum
  • Chairs and/or serves on a variety of committees at building, district, and community levels.
  • Performs duties as assigned by the Principal

Talent Development (in collaboration with the Teaching & Learning Department)

  • Provides support and leadership in on-going professional learning focused on a continuous improvement process
  • Implements, supports, and monitors professional learning communities.
  • Facilitates the intellectual and personal development of teachers with a focus on improving student achievement
  • Researches and provides supplementary materials and resources for quality classroom instruction
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching and holds individual teachers accountable for meeting their goals by conducting frequent formal and informal observations in order to provide timely, written feedback on instruction, preparation, and classroom environment as part of the district teacher evaluation system
  • Communicates and demonstrates researched-based instructional practices that result in increased student performance
  • Works collaboratively and collegially with Teachers on Special Assignment, Literacy Coaches, curriculum specialists and district specialists
  • Provides individualized, classroom-based developmental coaching with participants to support them in implementing good instructional practices
  • Provides organized, individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as needed

Data Analysis

  • Provides data to inform the development of the school's improvement plan aligned to the district strategic plan and initiatives
  • Uses data systems to organize and analyze student achievement data; ensure the validity and reliability of student data by attending to the rigor and alignment of assessments
  • Uses disaggregated data to determine priorities, monitor progress, and help sustain continuous improvement
  • Uses data to inform decision making, to develop and modify curriculum, and to develop targeted and differentiated instruction
  • Provides training and support for using data to drive quality instruction
  • Meets with teachers regularly to discuss data trends; problem solve with departments, collaborative teaching teams, and staff to prioritize the actions that impact student performance
  • Assists with the creation, completion and presentation of school reports, as well as required reports for the district
  • Provides support in analyzing student assessment data

Professional Development

  • Coaches and develops teachers to establish the foundations for successful classrooms: ambitious vision and goals, purposeful long-term plans and unit plans, rigorous assessments, strong relationships, and positive classroom cultures
  • Observes teachers weekly to gather data on student learning and teacher proficiency to diagnose teachers' strengths and weaknesses constantly and determine strategies for improving their practice and improving student learning
  • Provides a wide variety of learning opportunities for teachers focused on analyzing student work, effective planning, targeted and differentiated instruction, as well as high expectations for classroom culture and behavior
  • Supports the system to provide data-driven professional development and sharing of effective practice by thoughtfully providing and protecting staff time intentionally allocated for professional development purposes
  • Ensures the training, development, and support for high-performing instructional teacher teams to support adult learning and development to advance student learning and performance
  • Provides support and monitors the implementation of the use and effective implementation of digital classroom technology

Organizational Leadership

  • Serves on the Building Leadership Team; collaborate with team to determine school-wide professional development, curriculum and assessment needs to meet all school goals
  • Provides direct leadership, support, and mentorship of the building eight academic departments.
  • Communicates and implements the school's instructional vision
  • Provides leadership for curricular and instructional-based initiatives
  • Promotes the use of data driven decision making in various contexts, including curriculum design, assessment, and evaluation
  • Leads school improvement activities, departmental curriculum development and evaluation, and ensures compliance with state and federal mandates, district policies, and state and national standards.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Principal of Student Services to coordinate the administration of standardized testing and grade-level assessments and to disseminate the reporting of scores to students and state agencies
  • Assists with the creation of a school culture with staff, parents and students focused on strong academic achievement, fairness, respect, and high expectations for all
  • Works collaboratively with families and other members of the community to involve them in academic activities, to support the success of a diverse student population, and to bring in community partners

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing major organizational components; and supervising the use of funds for multiple departments. Experience

  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience required.
  • Prior experience in researched-based instructional practices.
  • Previous coaching or teacher leadership experience preferred.

Education: Master's degree in job related area. Illinois general administrative endorsement preferred, but not required.
