Position: Adaptive Physical Educator → $2,000 Annual Education Stipend

Starting Salary: $75,000 – $85,000 / year based on experience PLUS $2,000 Annual Education Stipend. Environment:
Special Education Program, Grades K-12. Program Locations:
Concord, CA | Pittsburg, CA.

Adaptive Physical Educator is part of the award-winning Special Education team. The role supports students in Grades K-12 by delivering physical education services aligned with each learner’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), building evidence‑based curriculum, and documenting progress.

Responsibilities

  • Implement designated services as detailed in each student’s IEP/ITP, meeting required weekly minutes within the specified service windows.
  • Develop standards‑aligned, evidence‑based curriculum consistent with the IEP/ITP intent, including on‑site and community‑based instruction monitored by the supervisor.
  • Build individualized schedules that directly address each student’s IEP/ITP goals for designated services.
  • Consult with the supervisor on student progress and IEP/ITP/PBIP implementation, supporting transition planning for mainstreaming/inclusion or post‑secondary/adult programs.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluations of student needs; compile IEPs/ITPs and Progress Reports; report data to the supervisor, parents/caregivers, and district representative.
  • Maintain accurate, timely data in student programs, classroom records, and designated data systems.
  • Assist teachers and classroom staff with related‑service curriculum by modeling best practices and preparing materials.
  • Participate in IEP meetings as requested and present goal‑related data.
  • Provide direct services through collaboration with instructional and clinical teams.
  • Prepare individualized materials and adaptive equipment to maximize student access and engagement.
  • Facilitate student transitions to the least restrictive environment with coordinated planning and skill generalization.
  • Complete required basic competency training, supervision training, and compliance modules.
  • Maintain required credentials through staff development.
  • Observe and train staff to implement related‑service goals consistently during the school day.
  • Mentor classroom staff upon supervisor’s request, meeting credentialing and professional development requirements.
  • Attend required meetings, including supervision sessions, all‑staff meetings, annual planning, and action‑team forums.
  • Use objective, professional language in communication with colleagues and stakeholders (NORMS).
  • Give and receive feedback professionally, prioritizing appropriate timing, setting, confidentiality, and data‑based rationale.
  • Adhere to Chance Light and Spectrum Center policies, procedures, and protocols without exception.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support high‑quality, student‑centered services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in education or a closely related field.
  • Licensed currently or in the process of obtaining an Adaptive Physical Educator (APE) credential.
  • Special education instruction credential preferred.
  • Valid California state driver’s license.
  • Certification in approved crisis‑management training.
  • Experience with adaptive physical education services, preferably in alternative, special education, or behavioral health settings.
  • Knowledge of special education compliance for students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorders, or other disabilities.
  • Experience with students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Proficiency in ABA, PBIS, effective teaching strategies, classroom management systems, data‑based decision making, FBA, and BIP.
  • Effective motivation and communication skills to support student progress.
  • Ability to act calmly and independently in emergencies.
  • Strong oral and written communication, organization, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology, including instructional technology and Microsoft Office Suite.
